Today is Election Day. An exciting day…at least I think so.
I’m always touched, inspired, and honestly a little optimistic when I step up to the voting machine. It’s not quite as cool as the old-school setup where you’d pull a curtain shut behind you and flick those retro-looking switches (remember those? You felt like you were launching a space shuttle).
Today it’s more like tapping a tablet at Panera, but still there’s something about it. Something that connects me to the generation before me and the one after me. I love taking my daughters. It’s a moment where we get to say something. Even if we’re not sure it will be heard.
I came across a quote the other day: “I voted because it’s exciting and I want to keep doing it.”
Yes. That’s it. That sums up the hope that gets me out the door and into the booth every time.
And I really do hope we all get to keep doing it!
Also, am I the only one who still feels like they need to dress up a little to vote? Not full suit and tie, but like…something better than sweatpants. But I’m one of those who think you shouldn’t wear shorts and a t-shirt when you go to The Olive Garden. (Just had this conversation with Janet last week).
In the end, Election Day is one of the most literal examples of “creating an environment that allows success to happen.” Whether the outcome goes the way we want or not, showing up is part of building that environment. Participating. Hoping. Believing in the power of tiny levers literally and figuratively.
So that’s my patriotic rant for the day. I’m off to grab an adult beverage and wear my “I Voted” sticker like it was handed out after climbing Everest. Because hey – it kinda feels that way.
Happy Election Day. May your lines be short, your ballot straightforward, and your sense of optimism stubborn.
