Watching John Adams

Be Good

Do Good

Those are words that John Adam’s told his daughter just before he left to go to Europe during the revolutionary war according to the mini-series “John Adam’s” on Max. Now, who knows if he really said this to her – maybe somebody does – but they are still good words to live by. Words that probably many, if not most of us, strive to live by. The hard thing is defining what good is and, is my good the same as your good.

I may say it’s good that the Florida Gators lose every football game they play. I would guess that there may be a strange group of folks that would disagree. Who’s “good” is right?

I may say that it isn’t good that we created a concentration camp in the middle of a swamp. Others say, “that’s what I voted for!” Who’s “good” is right?

In re-watching the John Adam’s mini-series along with the annual re-watch of the musical “1776” over the 4th of July it is astounding the courage and fortitude it took for our founders to decide what was good for them and their “countrymen”. I don’t think we have that courage in government right now and that makes me sad. I wish there were at least some principles that our leaders would hold onto and not sway back and forth on the whims of one man.

Of course the Aliens and Sedition Acts that has come back into the news was a product of the Adam’s Administration so even he had a hard time with “Be Good” and “Do Good” all the time.

just something I’m thinking about…
