Last Friday I decided that I would go on a Sugar Strike. I would quit sugar cold-turkey. Maybe not the healthiest decision to make but I needed to break my sugar habit and going two weeks without sugar of any kind would, while not being easy, break it.
I made it one day.
But I’m not upset with making it just one day because I didn’t break the strike with processed foods, candy, sweets, snacks, soda or ice cream. I broke it with the natural sugars of apples and bananas.
Why did I break the strike, the cold-turkey after just one day?
I woke up Sunday morning and could barely shower and shave without needing to sit down. No energy at all! On Saturday I basically honored the carnivore diet. I ate 3 eggs and a burger (without bun and condiments) for breakfast. Some hot dogs at lunch and then had 3 eggs and a burger for dinner. Yeah, I didn’t plan this very well so no wonder I crashed the next day.
I decided that eating my normal breakfast of chopped apples and bananas mixed with cottage cheese would be ok and after eating this I felt a lot better.
I have kept this up for the next 5 days…with just two cheats. I ate 3 jelly beans on two days when I was feeling a little woozy but as I move into the 7th day I am starting to feel better…and my blood sugar has been way down from where “normal” has been for me. i am very surprised that the cravings that I was expecting to have not been too bad. In fact, I am starting the opposite…I see M&Ms and say “nope! Don’t want ‘em.” My headaches have reduced dramatically – I expected to have more to start off with but, luckily have not. (this is a huge deal – I have had daily headaches for decades)
I have had some brain fog, some (a lot) of fatigue and just overall “blahness”. Some crankiness too but, again, not as much as I was expecting. My wife has noticed and told me to start having a drink or two again (LOL). I stopped drinking on May 1st as well. She said doing both at the same time – limiting sugar and no alcohol – might be too much but I think it’s working ok.
I know 7 days isn’t very long to kick a habit or establish new habits but I’m pretty happy with the results so far. I’ve always known that sugar is poison but couldn’t resist. Hopefully I won’t need the 3 jelly beans twice a week soon!
