I have three other posts started but not finished but decided to write about what Senator Cory Booker is doing right now. It’s 6:50 pm as I type and if he holds the floor for about 29 more minutes he will have the record for the longest speech given on the senate floor. I guess you can’t call it a filibuster but I do call it fascinating.
Sure, it performative and it’s impact will probably be small but it’s still an interesting endeavor and while I haven’t been able to listen and watch but a couple of hours, it is enough to give the man credit for doing something.
One of the post I have started is about the bullying the current administration is doing. It is how we all need to stand up but especially those in the two other branches of government, the Congress and the Judicial branch. I write how these branches cannot give up their power to the Executive branch but it seems like they are doing just that. So I have to give Senator Booker credit for doing something. He has at least started a conversation – even if the conversation goes something like, “this isn’t doing anything. He’s just grandstanding.” Sure – that may be accurate but he also has people saying, “What? What is he doing? Why is he doing it? Odd…”
I like the attempt. What we have to do now is to take this effort and enhance it. Use this 24 hour plus speech as our introductory sentence in the story we write on the survival of our country.
It’s funny. I just re-watched “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” about two weeks ago.
