I’m quoting Prince. “Positivity, have you had your plus sign today…” As with all Prince lyrics there are many layers and nuances to this song’s lyrics (well, maybe not all Prince songs – there are some that are pretty simple – I’m looking at you Delirious) but I keep this one line in my mind, perhaps out of context, and find myself singing it often for my own purpose.
“Positivity…have you had your plus sign today?”
The way I think of this lyric is that each day there are positive things happening all around you and with you. All you have to do is recognize it.
You better recognize!
I believe that we all do a very good job of finding the negativity and it seems overwhelming but I will challenge you to look for the positivity – I think there is much more of it than the negative.
We just overthink it
We look for the HUGE positive things. Whereas we allow the tiny negative things to beat us down. Why not recognize all of the tiny positives in our lives, the medium size positives and, of course, the HUGE things.
Coffee in the morning – positive. Not something to take for granted. Hot shower…a great pleasure. Car starts right up – so positive. The sun on your face – lovely. Saying good morning to your spouse, your kids, your tribe at work…how great is all of that!

As you start looking for your positivity, you’ll find that it will be easier to recognize it tomorrow. It’s sort of like when you buy a new car. when I bought my Xterra in 2008 I did not see many on the road. After I bought it, as soon as I pulled off the lot, I saw an Xterra. I pulled down the road and stopped at a light – another Xterra. Driving down the road…can you believe it…another Xterra. Once I recognized and grabbed an Xterra it was much easier to spot them elsewhere.
Looking for, recognizing and grabbing the positives in your life will work the same way.
