Dogs are smart.
I’m probably not telling you anything you don’t already know. Oh sure, they have their stupid moments.
They chase their tails
They run into screens
They fall off of sofas
But those things just add to their charm. But they are smart.
Everyday when I get ready for work Nellie, our new dog, sort of lays around. However, when I put on my work shoes she runs and hides under the dining table. She knows that she will be going to “bed”, her crate, and I don’t think she especially likes it. I have to hook her up to a leash and, while she comes with little resistance, she ain’t happy about it.
Now when I start getting ready for a run it’s an entirely different scenario. As soon as she sees me put on a running shirt she gets excited and starts following me wherever I go. How she knows its a running shirt and not just a regular t-shirt I have no idea but she does. When I put on my running shoes she gets even more excited. Running around me, making little noises – and then when I put on my reflective vest and phone strap its honey bar the door. She runs to the front door. She runs back to me. Runs back to the front door. Turns around in circles. Jumps up.
She is ready to go!
I know dogs love routines. Nellie is no different. She knows when the kids come home from school. She knows our car when it pulls into the driveway. She knows when its’s time to go to bed at night. But this shoe thing is different. Or maybe it’s not but I’ll stick with…
