The other day I wrote that I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to respond to the news of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and the entire system.
I have figured out what I am going to do first.
I say “first” because I know this will be a life-long endeavor and I will be required to do more. But first I am going to become a student. And not just a student on the issue of police brutality but a student of systemic racism in our country. I have learned so much in just the past week and I have also learned how little I don’t know.
I didn’t know a thing about Black Wall Street.
I didn’t know a thing about redlining.
I didn’t know a thing about Fannie Lou Hamer
I didn’t even know that Mississippi didn’t ratify the 13th amendment until 2013.
But I have learned a few things…
I have learned I can help by listening
I have learned I can help by educating myself
I have learned that I can help by speaking out.
I’m learning…come join me in my study.
